¹³ They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon^(A), which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.^(B)

²⁶ Heshbon was the city of Sihon^(A) king of the Amorites,^(B) who had fought against the former king of Moab^(C) and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.^(D)

³⁶ When Balak^(A) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon^(B) border, at the edge of his territory.

Defeat of Sihon King of Heshbon

²⁴ “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge.^(A) See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite,^(B) king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage^(C) him in battle.

³⁶ From Aroer^(A) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead,^(B) not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave^(C) us all of them.

⁸ So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites^(A) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.^(B)

¹⁶ But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,^(A) which is the border of the Ammonites.
